Nova and Dorian first met in 1976, peering through the bars of their cribs. Just babies then, they had no idea that a few short years later, they’d be united by a love of distorted guitars, big hair, and denim jackets—much to their parents’ dismay.
In 1980, Nova embraced the darkness after witnessing a performance that was as chaotic as it was prophetic: the Riverbottom Nightmare Band, featured in Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas. While some credit Steve Wozniak’s 1983 US Festival for bringing metal to the American masses, Nova would argue that Jim Henson got there first.
Their first metal collaboration came in 1982, when Nova suggested they wear wigs, stack on bracelets and rings, grab brooms for air guitars, and host a backyard KISS concert. Dorian, once terrified of KISS, had a change of heart after five minutes of fantasy shredding with his cousin. His fate was sealed.
As the '80s roared on, Nova and Dorian fell in love with “happy metal”—better known as glam—and the sound blasting out of the Sunset Strip. Nova became the first official headbanger in the family when she convinced her parents to buy her Slippery When Wet on cassette in 1986. Dorian followed suit a year later, using his lawn-mowing money to buy The Final Countdown.
Over the next thirty years, music remained a constant. Dorian played lead guitar and bass in a slew of bands, while Nova became a college radio DJ, hosting her own hard rock and metal show. Though neither pursued music professionally, both became rock stars in their own fields.
Nova earned a PhD in Data Science and built a career in corporate security. Dorian earned his PhD in English, Comparative Literature, and Creative Writing.
Though life took them in different directions and different cities, metal had its own way of bringing them back together. Because once you're bonded by glam, there's no turning back.
